Local OCR vs Cloud OCR: Why Stay Local

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is the technology that extracts text from images. It is essential for making scanned PDFs searchable and editable.

Two approaches exist: cloud OCR (Google Vision, AWS Textract, Azure) and local OCR (Tesseract, which runs on your machine).

Cloud services (Google, AWS) use very advanced AI models that can achieve 99%+ accuracy on clean documents. On complex documents (poor quality scans, handwriting), they remain superior.

Tesseract, the local OCR engine used by SafePDF, achieves 95-98% accuracy on quality printed documents. This is sufficient for the vast majority of use cases (invoices, contracts, administrative documents).
